Functionality

Now you have your sitemap you need to think carefully about the functionality of each page in it.You probably already have a basic idea or you wouldn’t have an app idea at all but now you need to get all this down.

These may seem unnecessary but the time invested in this now can solve a lot of issues that might crop up later. Suppliers will be able to give you more realistic quotes if they have this to work from. Plus it will also help them flag up and work with you to iron out any possible difficulties they see with your desired design or functionality at an early stage.

You will need to look at every single type of page and write down (bullet points should do) exactly how it should work, even if it seems really obvious.You could also break it down like:

  • Where the content should come from;
  • What buttons appear on it and what they should do;
  • What navigation options there are;
  • Are there any links to external services (Facebook/Twitter) or ‘send to a friend’ functions.

Take a look at my partial Functionality List example on the following page to see one way of doing this.

If you would like to use this Functionality List as a template for your own project there is a blank copy in the Resources section of this guide or a spreadsheet (.xls format) which you can download from the Members Area (under Resources) of app-outsourcing-guide.com
